A full installation gives you the X Window System, C/C++ development environments, Perl, networking utilities, a mail server, a news server, a web server, an ftp server, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, Netscape Communicator, plus many more programs. Slackware Linux can run on 486 systems all the way up to the latest x86 machines (but uses -mcpu=i686 optimization for best performance on i686-class machines like the P3, P4, and Duron/Athlon).

Gentoo Linux http://www.gentoo.org 11206x
Gentoo Linux is source-based distribution. It means whole system is compiled from scratch. But compilation is simple: Gentoo has Portage packaging system which makes compilation easier. For example: Installing&compiling postfix+fetchmail+antispam filter+clamav antivirus with all needed perl's modules is only about typing "emerge postfix fetchmail amavisd". Gentoo is not for beginners, you have to set up all applications by hand (but it's not difficult :-)) List of installable packages: http://packages.gentoo.org The distribution is clean, applications run faster and there are only packages you want.

Debian http://www.debian.org 10478x

The distribution consists of 1 to 7 CDs, and may be instaled and updated (even upgraded) over LAN or internet. Package versions are here: http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages

Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/ 10244x
Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full featured. Puppy boots into a 48-64MB ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in its entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device (flash-Puppy), CDROM (live-Puppy), Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk (zippy-Puppy), floppy disks (floppy-Puppy), internal hard drive (hard-Puppy) or a network drive to a thin-client. The Puppy Linux project does not provide a package list of included software packages and versions.

If you like Damn Small Linux you can install it on your hard drive. Because all the applications are small and light it makes a very good choice for older hardware.

Its name is due to the presence of two big Xs in his environment: one is the last letter of Unix and the other is the first letter of X-window :-) Supported formats are all formats supported by mplayer, most noticeably DivX and QuickTime but more in general any DVD, VCD, AudioCD, avi, mpeg, ogm, wmv, asf, fli and a few others.
